$GREED was started by Bob Ayers and Wayne Hackett in 1980 when they were both working actors in Los Angeles. They took $GREED to play with their fellow actors and crew in between takes on the sets of the films and TV. Everyone was riveted by the strategy and fast pace play of the game. Soon afterwards, Wayne brought on board legal counsel and entrepreneur, Walter Morgan, (a song and dance man in his own right) to form
The Great American Greed Company.

As the popularity of $GREED grew and grew, it was time to make it available for everyone to play. In the beginning, $GREED was manufactured and distributed by The Great American Greed Company. Wayne and his friends sold, packaged and shipped the game out of his garage in Studio City, California. The orders poured in. To keep up with demand it was first licensed to Avalon Hill Games and then to TDC Games in the U.S.
Internationally, $GREED has been represented by
Crown and Andrews Pty Ltd. In Australia, $GREED became the #1 game on the continent for 3 consecutive years.
In Canada, England and Western Europe Waddington Games was the manufacturer and distributor.
